Weed and Eczema
Most people have heard something positive about the healing properties of marijuana. In fact, the list of conditions that weed seems to be able to help treat just seems to be growing.
One ailment on said list is eczema, a painful and irritating skin disease that affects thousands, if not millions, of people all over the world.
Atopic eczema, otherwise called atopic dermatitis, is the most common kind of eczema, and is characterised by itchy, pink, dry skin.
These symptoms are enough to drive anybody mad, with most sufferers reporting that the condition is unbearable. The condition typically affects children, and usually persists for the long-term.
Allergic Condition
Although, the condition can clear up and has the potential to disappear altogether.
There isn’t really any known cause of eczema, though there is some kind of link between people who have it and people who have allergies.
That is, if someone has an allergic condition, such as hay fever, there is a bigger chance of them also developing atopic eczema. Some experts even suggest that stress or weather conditions can play a part.
When eczema occurs as a result of a trigger from an external source, the skin can become inflamed and itchy.
It appears that cannabis, though, when applied as a topical cream or lotion, can relieve the inflammation by activating an immunosuppressive effect.
Cannabis soap could be another effective method at relieving eczema symptoms.
Research
The scientific paper that’s included in the Experimental Dermatology journal states that the alteration of the endocannabinoid system could be vital in the development of certain skin diseases.
Essentially, this means that damage or disruption to the endocannabinoid system in the body could be an indirect cause of eczema – and cannabis consumption has been shown time and time again to stimulate and improve this system.
The authors of the paper also state that, ‘…cannabinoids… could be considered as potential anti-inflammatory drugs.’
All in all, more research definitely needs to be done with regard to cannabis and eczema, as well as all other skin conditions.
Although, what has been found so far is especially promising, considering several scientific journals have published encouraging findings and hypotheses.
Only time will tell just how effective cannabis topicals are in the treatment of eczema, but I am hopeful.
